Russell Crowe is best known for his many award-worthy performances, particularly his Oscar-winning role in the 2000 film Gladiator. He will not return for the film’s sequel, Gladiator 2, later this year, though, as his character, the Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, died in the first film. Crowe doesn’t seem particularly thrilled that the film even has a sequel. He explained on the Kyle Meredith with… podcasts:
“I’m a little uncomfortable that they’re doing another one, because, obviously, I’m dead and I have no say in what’s going to be done. But a couple of things I’ve heard I say: no, no, no, they don’t fit into the moral journey of that particular character. But I can’t say anything, it’s not my job, I’m two meters underground. So we’ll see what it’s like.”
He continued:
“It does, in a funny way – I think back: the age I was when I made that movie and all the things that followed, the doors that that particular movie opened for me. I’m just being honest: there’s definitely a tinge of melancholy, a tinge of jealousy. Then she joked, “I remember when I had tendons.”
This isn’t the first time Crowe has weighed in on the upcoming film. In an interview in 2023, he said he was “slightly jealous” of not being part of the sequel, telling Collider:
“The only thing I really feel is a little jealous, you know? Because I was much younger, obviously, and it was a great experience in my life. It’s something that changed my life, really. It changed the way people looked at me and what I do for a living, and, you know, I’ve been very fortunate to be involved in a lot of great films, but the legs of that film are incredible.
Crowe said the film “holds a special place in my heart” as it had “longevity”, something not all films have.
THE Gladiator the sequel is set years after the original film and has Paolo Mescal taking on the role of Lucius Spencer Treats Clark depicted in the 2000 film. In the sequel, Mescal plays the role of Lucius, Lucilla’s son (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). It’s also in the cast Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen returned as Lucilla, Stranger things star Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla, e Fred Hechinger will play Emperor Geta.
The film will hit theaters on November 22.
