Netflix has launched Timothy Olyphant as the voice of Terminator in the upcoming anime series Terminator Zero. This is fantastic casting and it will be fun to see how Olyphant plays the character.
The series is set in the same universe as James Cameron, but the Connor family is not part of the plot. It will focus on all new characters.
Terminator Zero comes from the showrunner/executive producer/writer Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, Batman II), and explains in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the series will have the same kind of sci-fi horror feel as Cameron’s original film.
Tomlin previously said: “There is a completely valid version of the Terminator franchise where the Terminator is synonymous with Jason and Freddy, where he is a relentless serial killer. There’s a bit of Friday the 13th here. There’s a little bit of Michael Myers in there.”
The series description reads: “2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The artificial intelligence known as Skynet gains self-awareness and begins its war against humanity.
“Trapped between the future and the present, there is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. He arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new artificial intelligence system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity.
“As Malcolm grapples with the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by a relentless assassin from the future who forever alters the fate of his three children.”
The anime comes from the Japanese animation studio Production IG (Ghost in the shell). The first season will consist of eight episodes and will be released on Netflix on August 29, 2024.
