Tom Burkethe actor who plays War Rig pilot Praetorian Jack Furiosa: A Mad Max Sagarecently spoke about the possibility of shooting one of the film’s most brutal scenes with the director George Miller.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you might want to skip this one because we’re getting into major spoiler territory.
In the film, Furiosa forms a very close relationship with Jack when she joins his War Rig team, but it all ends tragically when Dementus and his henchmen ambush the War Rig at the Bullet Farm.
Jack and Furiosa manage to get out of that situation alive, and while they are on their way to find the Green Place and start a new life, Dementus catches up with them and kills their dream.
The ruthless and heartless warlord forces Furiosa to watch as Jack is tied to the back of a motorcycle and dragged in a circle with the dogs attacking him in the process. This is something Jack doesn’t survive.
During an interview with GQ, Burke talked about filming this scene, saying, “It’s a very unromantic death. [George] we wanted to drag everything out of the car, Chris talking to us, being tied up, [all shot in] one take.
“All of a sudden they said before we started, George wants to do some longer parts on this. Which I love, I think it gives the whole film a whole other quality, something more lyrical.”
The actor continued, “And I was like, ‘Are we going to do this on my first day? Truly? They want to get rid of me.’ I had a little square there.
“Essentially to make sure the costume didn’t rub too much, or get scratched, right above my solar plexus. When there’s a high shot and I’m completely still, that’s a dummy or something. They digitally printed the mannequin, it’s me very accurately. But when it’s a dead body, it doesn’t have to be me.
Furious it was an amazing movie and it must have been amazing for the cast to shoot.
