Denis Villeneuve comments on the dismal summer box office and says he is “disappointed to still be number one”

Dune franchising director Denis Villeneuve is a little disappointed with how the summer box office has gone so far. He recently commented on the topic saying that he is “disappointed to still be number one”.

Duna: second part it grossed more than $711 million worldwide. It remains the highest-grossing film of 2024, even before that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($567 million).

Villeneuve hopes things will pick up, saying: “I hope, sooner or later, the summer box office will be much better.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga AND The Garfield Movie are two of the first big summer films to be released, and although Garfield lived up to its expectations, Furious it fell underneath, which surprised me! It’s a truly great movie and it’s everything movie fans love about going to the movies!

Villeneuve went on to explain, “I think we need films that are theatrical experiences, that fully embrace the power of theater, and I’m not just talking about Dune 2.”

And he continues: “Of course, I’m talking about many films. A film like Civil War, for example, is a great example of a film that absolutely utilized the power of theater. I was lucky that Part 2 made it to the public, I wish it happened more often, honestly..

Some of the films that audiences are looking forward to this summer include Deadpool and Wolverinewhich will be a great success, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Inside out 2, The observers, A quiet place: first dayAND Twister, Horizonand more.

In the end, I think Deadpool and Wolverine it will be the biggest movie of the summer, maybe even of the entire year.
