In recent months there has been a lot of talk about Stephen Sommers’ classic 1999 supernatural adventure film The Mummy because the film celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Well, an interesting report has surfaced from Daniel Richtman that Universal Pictures is developing a prequel film and that Wes Tooke (Halfway, The Rescue) is attached to write the script.
There’s really nothing else to report, but it’s enough to get fans excited about what this could end up with, if the rumor is true.
Star of the original franchise Brendan Fraser He’s talked a lot about returning to the franchise for a fourth Mummy movie, and that it’s something he’d be open to doing. But if we get a prequel movie, don’t expect to see Fraser in it.
I imagine that if a prequel film is made, it will probably focus on Imhotep’s early life. It would be an interesting story to tell and it would make sense to tell it.
We’ll have to wait to see if anything comes of it. Meanwhile, The Mummy returns to theaters for its 25th anniversary on July 5.
