I have a must-watch video here that explores the original Star Wars films and how they were initially conceived as silent films and how the stories are carried by music.
George Lucas he said that the Star Wars films are basically silent films and that they are made to be understood without the use of dialogue, and instead are built on a combination of music and editing.
This video from CinemaStix explains how this is true thanks to the universally recognized themes within each film.
The stories are deeply thematic, symbolic, truly elemental, in their depiction of good and evil, darkness and light. Universally recognized concepts, archetypes and age-old conflicts presented through physical expression, characterization, action, staging, costume, color and, of course, through music.
Boyd also compares these classic films to highly recognizable films from the silent era. He said:
Films of the silent era were particularly notable and popular for the way they managed to overcome language barriers and be universally understood without translation.
This is a very interesting video that will open your eyes to the visual storytelling of Star Wars. This is something that has been lost as the franchise has grown into what it has become.
Storytelling has become lazy for many of the projects under Disney’s franchise rule.
