Will Smith offered another update on I am legend sequel he is developing with Michael B. Jordan. The film was announced last year, and Francesco Lorenzo he is set to direct the film.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, he shared, “We spent a couple of weeks together about a month ago. I think it’s going well. [We have some] really solid ideas… I think we can pull it off together on screen.”
Smith added that Jordan is “the truth, so I would love to do it.” He had previously spoken about their status in the process, saying: “We’re very close, the script has just arrived.”
He then added: “You have to be a real one I am legend I’m curious to know, but in the first movie version, my character dies, but on the DVD there was an alternate version of the ending where my character lived. We are following the mythology of the DVD version. I can’t tell you anything else, but Michael B. Jordan is there.
Lawrence also previously spoke about why he wanted to take on the project, saying, “It’ll start a few decades after the first one. I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world only post-apocalypse but also after.” a period of 20-30 years”.
He joked: “You see how the Earth reclaims the world, and there is something beautiful in the question: when man moves away from being the primary tenant, what happens? This will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll go up the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless.”
He went on to discuss the influence he had Richard MathesonMatheson’s 1954 novel will have in the sequel: “We go back to Matheson’s original book and the alternative ending to the one published in the original film.
“What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing that we’re going to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.”
In the first film, Smith played virologist Robert Neville, apparently the last man on Earth. He was the only survivor of a man-made plague and immune to the virus that transformed the infected into the vampire-like Darkseekers. Neville has successfully developed a cure.
It will be interesting to see how they continue the story from the original ending of the discarded film.
