It has been confirmed Nicolas Cage is officially set to star in live-action Spider-Man Noir series set up at MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video.
Cage had previously confirmed that he was in talks to join the series, but at the time we had no idea whether he would actually take the job or not, so it’s pretty exciting to learn that fans will see Cage as Spider-Man Noir in real life. !
As you know, the actor voiced this character in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The big announcement was made ahead of Amazon’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on Tuesday.
Vernon Sandershead of television for Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement: “Expanding the Marvel Universe with ‘Noir’ is a unique and special opportunity and we are honored to bring
this series to our global Prime Video customers.”
He added: “The talented Nicolas Cage is the ideal choice for our new superhero and for the
accomplished production team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascaland the incredible team of
Sony is committed to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”
Catherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios added: “We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage star in this series! No one else could bring so much pathos, pain and heart to this singular character.
He continued: “Together with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Marvel Character Universe.”
The project is developed by The Punisher writer and producer Steve Lightfoot as co-showrunner and is joined by Oren Uziel, who is a writer on the project and will serve alongside Lightfoot as co-showrunners. Harry Bradbirre he will executive produce and direct the first two episodes.
The series will be set in 1930s New York and will follow the adventures of this fan-favorite Spider-Man variant, ready to take on the criminal underworld in his signature noir style. It was previously reported that the show will be set in a separate universe and the main character will not be Peter Parker.
In this noir-inspired world, Peter Parker takes on the role of Spider-Man in the comics, but with a decidedly interesting twist. Dressed in a trench coat and fedora, Spider-Man Noir fights crime in the shadows of New York City, exploring a landscape full of corruption and danger.
The character design and narrative draw heavily from the film noir genre, incorporating detective fiction elements and a morally ambiguous atmosphere. Over the course of his adventures, Spider-Man Noir faces a gallery of villains.
Previously speaking about playing the character, Cage said: “It’s no secret that I love the character.” He also described the character as a sort of “mash up”, inspired by Golden Age actors such as Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart.
The actor said: “I get to combine my favorite golden age performances – meaning Robinson, Cagney, Bogart – with a character who is, I guess, widely regarded [to be] Stan Lee’s masterpiece. I see it as a sort of foray into a pop art mash up of, sort of, a [Jungian] Lichtenstein, a mix of Bogart and Cagney.
The role will mark the first regular television role of Cage’s career.
