Director Shawn Levy was an obvious choice for this year’s summer blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine. She had previously worked with Hugh Jackman in the 2011 film Real steelas well as Ryan Reynolds ON Free boy (2021) e The Adam project (2022).
Levy also worked on two films of the caliber of Night at the Museum movie, Date nightand the highly successful series Stranger things, so he knows how to make quality projects that are fun and exciting to watch. But Deadpool and Wolverine is healing an old wound in Levy that he spoke about in a recent interview.
Levy sat down with Empire Online to talk about his career and explained his excitement in jumping on board this Marvel project, which ties into his biggest regret about the one project that fell through more than a decade ago:
“On the set of The Adam Project, Ryan asked me if I would consider doing Deadpool 3. And I remember him saying, ‘I know you’re going to say no, but I’m going to really try to convince you to do it. ‘ And my response was, “I won’t do it.” [frick]I say no, are you kidding? That’s a hard and immediate yes, sir!’ When we were making Real Steel, Hugh wanted to do The Wolverine and he asked me if I wanted to do it. And like an idiot, I said, “No.” Because at that moment I was thinking, ‘Well, it’s the fifth time you’ve played the character, I’m doing original films etc.’ And I deeply regretted it for years. And so, when the opportunity presented itself again, thank God I was older and wiser enough to take the chance.”
Speaking about what makes this film even more appealing, aside from the regret of missing it the first time, Levy said:
“These are very different characters. You have the Merc With the Mouth, and you have a guy who doesn’t even like words very much. This isn’t a recipe for romance, it’s a recipe for conflict. And there’s something delightful about that conflict.”
From what we’ve seen so far, Levy was definitely the right director for the job. And I’m happy that even though there have been some leaks, I feel like there will still be a lot of surprises with this movie, and that’s my favorite part about being a Marvel fan!
Deadpool and Wolverine will hit theaters this summer on July 26.
