What is that evil orb in the first photo of James Gunn’s SUPERMAN

The first image of James Gunn’S Superman was shared with the actor yesterday David Corenswet all dressed up as Superman and prepared for battle in his luxury apartment downtown. I didn’t realize journalists made so much money!

Anyway, most fans are talking about the design of the suit, but there’s one other big thing in the image that was interesting… a giant floating evil sphere that shoots a pink beam over the city.

This is what Superman casually prepares to fight. In that photo, it doesn’t look like he’s too worried or in a hurry. But what is that sphere!?

Fans speculate that the deadly orb in the sky above Metropolis is the DC villain “Solaris”, created by Grant Morrison in the 1998 series DC one millionand also had a role in the All-Star Superman comic.

Solaris is a stellar supercomputer from the 853rd century. “This man-made sun tyrant has tried to conquer two eras. By coding its evil into a techno-virus sent to infect 20th century machinery, Solaris literally created itself.”

Solaris can infect and consume stars and becomes obsessed with fighting Superman and all of his descendants, in a feud that lasts from the 20th century until the 853rd century.

In the comics, the JLA and their future Justice Legion-A counterparts had to join forces to defeat this sentient star.

This is just speculation, but he also seems like the kind of villain Gunn would enjoy playing with in a Superman story.

In the Superman All Star In the story, Solaris teams up with Lex Luthor to defeat Superman by dyeing the sun red, which would drain Clark Kent’s powers. Solaris ends up poisoning the sun, forcing Superman to sacrifice himself to rekindle the sun.

Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman; Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio, in the role of Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
