It’s been a long road to Ryan Reynolds obtain Deadpool and Wolverine established at Marvel Studios after Disney purchased 20th Century Fox.
Kevin Feige he initially wasn’t sure what to do with the character or how exactly to incorporate him into the MCU. Even though he kept saying they wouldn’t compromise the R-rated aspect of the character, Feige kept passing on Reynolds’ proposals.
Reynolds’ first pitch to Feige was a “Rashomon story about Wolverine and Deadpool and something they got into together.” Reynolds explained to Empire that the story was “told from three completely different perspectives. It was a way to make a large-scale film in a very small way.”
A RashomonA style story is one in which the same event is told by different characters and the stories differ in ways that are impossible to reconcile. This shows that two or more people can see the same event very differently.
Feige passed on that version of the film. Feige explained: “The truth is, I wasn’t even sure how to incorporate Deadpool.”
He added: “I was thinking a lot about how to involve mutants and the X-Men [the MCU], and I thought it had to be more than just playing the hits. But the truth is that Ryan is an idea machine. So he may have proposed it to me, but he also proposed 25 other thoughts and ideas.
Reynolds later confirmed: “I went back to the drawing board and wrote about 18 different treatments. Some of them almost like a Sundance film, a budget under $10 million, using intellectual property in a way that they haven’t used before, and I’ve pitched bigger films and pitched things in between.
I would love to read other treatments for the film! It would be fun to see the different scenarios Reynolds imagines for the third Deadpool movie.
After exploring many different avenues, they have finally agreed where to take the story and will let Deadpool be Deadpool.
Executive producer Wendy Jacobson added, “We definitely spun our wheels a little bit trying to find why this movie came to be. Once Hugh raised his hand, two months later we were getting ready. It was honestly one of the fastest turnarounds I’ve ever seen.
Shawn Levy is directing the film and the film’s confirmed cast includes Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Emma Corrin in the role of Cassandra Nova, Morena Baccarin AND Stefan Kapicic like Vanessa and Colossus, Matthew Macfadyen as a TVA agent e Leslie Uggam in the role of blind Al.
They are united by Brianna Hildebrand AND Shioli Kutsuna, who will also return to the franchise as Negasonic Warhead and Negasonic Warhead’s girlfriend, Yukio. This had already been confirmed Jennifer Garner she will return as Elektra in the film.
