Finally this week we got to see the trailer for DC’s Joker: Folie a Deuxin which Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as Arthur Fleck, and joins him in this new story Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
Todd Phillips is back as director of the sequel and it looks like Warner Bros. is ready to have another hit on their hands.
The trailer launched to a staggering 167 million viewers in the first 24 hours. The teaser trailer went online soon after its debut at Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas.
Variety reported that the Joker The number of trailers and the social commitment of the sequel have surpassed those of the first Barbie trailer to become Warner Bros.’ the biggest launch in recent years. The release was no doubt boosted by Lady Gaga’s massive social media presence of 150 million followers.
The trailer instantly became the #1 trending video. 1 on YouTube on the night of the premiere and currently boasts 15.6 million views, counting on that platform alone, where it remains the No. 1 trending video. 4 almost two days after its launch.
The trailer numbers are great news for Warner Bros. Beating Barbie is notable, as that film grossed $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office for the studio and was the highest-grossing film of last year.
The original Joker exceeded $1 billion in 2019; the sequel is aiming for an even higher total given this initial interest and the addition of superstar Lady Gaga to the cast.
Among the trailers for the studio films of the year, Joker: Folie a Deux beat the debut of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (100 million views) and beat Pixar’s Inside out 2 (157 million views to become the biggest debut for a Disney animated film).
Joker’s trailer was inferior to Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverinewhich earlier this year set a record as the biggest trailer launch of all time with 365 million views.
However, the Marvel Tentacle launched on Super Bowl Sunday, and its viewership was factored into the telecast. THE Joker: Folie a Deux the trailer launch was purely digital.
Little is known about the actual plot of Joker: Folie à Deux aside from the fact that it is reportedly a jukebox musical set in Arkham Asylum. Phoenix returns to the title role, which earned him the Oscar for Best Actor. Gaga plays Harley Quinn.
The supporting cast includes Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung AND Harry Lawtey.
Director Todd Phillips said at CinemaCon that calling the film a musical wasn’t exactly accurate. “I like to say it’s a movie where music is an essential element,” Phillips said. “It’s not that different from the first film. Arthur has music in him. He has a grace about him.
Joker 2 will debut on the big screen on October 4th, exactly five years after the first film. The sequel will be screened in Imax 70mm format.
