Kevin Costner he was one of the central characters of the series Yellowstone for the first five seasons, but his future on the show was hazy, as reports over the past year indicated he wasn’t committed to carrying the character forward until the show’s end. Both the actor and the creator of the show, Taylor Sheridanthey hinted at problems behind the scenes, but were diplomatic about what they revealed.
Now, Costner is trying to finalize plans for his return, while also hoping to stretch his storyline for two more seasons. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor spoke about his hopes of returning.
“I wish we could do it but we couldn’t. I thought I would do seven [seasons] but now it’s five o’clock. So how does that work – I hope so – but they have a lot of different shows going on. Maybe he will. Maybe this will come back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable [it]I’d like to do it.
If he were to return to the fold, Costner has some ideas about potential storylines.
“Well, you know, he has to be proactive in what happens and I’ve had my fantasy of what that might be like, but that’s Taylor’s thing. I told him this a while ago. I’ve thought about how that might happen, but we’ll just have to see.
Costner’s contract disagreements kept new episodes of Yellowstone on ice. In February 2023, Variety reported that the actor’s increasingly limited filming schedule has jeopardized his role on the show. Costner would have liked to reduce the time spent on set to work on his next film saga Horizonwhose first chapter will be released in June.
In September, he threatened to sue the producers for lost wages following his release from the series, saying: “I couldn’t help them anymore. We tried to negotiate, they offered me less money than in previous seasons, there were problems with creativity.”
It was announced in November Yellowstone they would continue filming in the spring of 2024 and the fifth season would be the last. The most recent new episode of Yellowstone airing January 1, 2023.
