The 1938 comic that introduced Superman to the world, Action Comics No. 1recently sold at auction for a record sum.
The comic sold for $6 million at Heritage Auctions. This copy of Action comics Issue #1 is rated 8.5 by CGC and the edition is one of the best condition copies known in the world.
According to Heritage, there are only two previous copies that have achieved a higher rating. This is also only the second comic ever to sell for over $5 million and the previous record holder was also a copy of 2022’s Action Comics #1.
There was a second copy of Action comics sold in the same auction, breaking a different record. Hertigate said it was professionally restored to “an apparent grade” of 8.0 and the comic sold for $576,000. This is the most ever for a restored comic.
Heritage Auctions vice president Barry Sandoval said in a statement: “Today’s top three lots would be hard to beat when it comes to exciting bidding wars – an all-time record for a comic book, surrounded by two absolutely stunning surprises.”
He added: “We are thrilled to have made history today with a history-filled auction, including everything from a pre-Golden Age Superman artifact to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We couldn’t be happier for our consignors and those winners. bidders who acquired unparalleled objects.”
There are 78 copies of Action comics No. 1 in the CGC population report, with the ratings service estimating there are only about 100 surviving copies of the comic. In September last year, Heritage sold an issue rated CGC 0.5 for $408,000.
Another thing that was auctioned off was Jerry Siegel’s historic 1934 letter to comic book artist Russell Keaton, which described the Man of Steel as being a time traveler from the distant future. The artifact sold for $264,000.
Heritage’s Comics & Art Auction continues here until April 7.
