The pair are synonymous with the franchise, but when was the idea for the first film first pitched Martin Lorenzohe admits that he actually wanted it Eddie Murphy be his on-screen partner.
In a recent Q&A promoting the upcoming sequel, Bad Boys: Ride or DieLawrence revealed his first co-star choice and why it didn’t work, saying:
“I had a deal with Sony, and this was a movie they brought to me to see if I wanted to do it, and I just had to find a partner to do it with. And I was thinking about doing it with Eddie Murphy and everything, but it costs too much.
Then he was pointed in the direction of Will Smith, and went on to detail their meeting:
“But I chose the right person, because it was my sister who said to me, ‘You should do it with Will.’ Two sitcom stars coming together to meet on the big screen, it could be something special. So Will and I had dinner and after five minutes of talking to Will, he became the best salesman ever. So I couldn’t say no, and he’s been the Bad Boys brand ever since.”
Lawrence previously worked with Murphy on the 1992 romantic comedy Boomerangand ended up teaming up again for the 1999 prison comedy Life. Nowadays, Murphy’s son and Lawrence’s daughter are engaged, and the two have exchanged funny opinions about who will pay for the wedding.G.
