The director of GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE talks about the origins of the villain Garraka

The bad guy inside Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire in the end it was a big disappointment for me. They created this really cool and interesting backstory for the character, but when he finally showed up to cause chaos, the fight faded away. I thought it was a pretty boring standoff, which is a shame.

They get all these characters together to fight this thing, and then the bad guy is in the firehouse garage and freezes everything. Nothing truly climactic happens! I don’t know, that ending should have been so much better, especially with a villain who was built to be so much more sinister.

However, the director of the film, Gil Kenanrecently spoke about the villain’s origin during an interview with CB, saying:

“The idea was that we knew that we were going to raise the stakes and that with this story we were going to move into the post-Gozerian era. So the idea of going from the hot summer camps of Somerville, Oklahoma to New York The city that in full of his summer would go through a deep freeze and supernatural was actually a fundamental concept that Jason and I had started to propose before, before even fleshing out the rest of the story. they were heading. Garraka began to become a sort of embodiment physics of terror that our heroes would have faced.”

Kenan went on to reveal where Garraka’s actual appearance and name came from, and how the creation was split between him and co-writer and producer Jason Reitman:

“(Garraka) started to take shape visually as we wrote it. I’m constantly drawing as we work, that’s how I think sometimes. So I started sketching out this kind of nightmarish character with long curling fingernails and horns that hunched over behind him, and that set of drawings literally ended up being the character that you met in the movie. His name, I remember Jason just saying the name out of nowhere. It was just like he turned to me and I said “Garraka” and I answered “Garraka”, that’s all. That’s how we came together, images on one side, name on the other. That’s how we work, always, we always kind of spin stories together and it’s just a really joyful experience to create with my best friend.”

I’ve already seen Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire twice, and the second time was hard to get through. Every single problem with the film stuck out like a sore thumb. I’m pretty bummed about this because I freaking love the Ghostbusters franchise! It’s so frustrating that this movie wasn’t as great as it should have been.
