Marvel actress Gwyneth Paltrow says Hollywood can only make so many good superhero movies

The superhero movie genre is going through growing pains right now with movie studios, filmmakers, and fans. Many of the recently released comic book movies have been box office disappointments and difficult to watch due to their lack of quality.

Gweneth Paltrow she spent a lot of time in the MCU as Pepper Potts, and recently shared her thoughts on the genre and believes Hollywood can only make so many good superhero movies.

While a guest on The Hot Ones YouTube talk show, Paltrow was asked to comment on her recent Academy Awards speech Jefferson Cable, who won Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on American Fiction. I wrote an article highlighting her speech which you can read here. He said:

“It’s a call to recognize and acknowledge that there are so many people out there who want the opportunity that I’ve been given. I get that this is a risk-averse industry, I get that, but even $200 million movies are a risk, and it doesn’t always work out. But you still run the risk. And instead of making one $200 million movie, try making ten $20 million movies, or 50 four million dollar movies!”

In response to her speech, Paltrow said:

“I totally understand where he’s coming from. You want to have the best chance of having a strong ROI. People put a lot of money into these things and want them to be profitable. But I think if I look at the industry as a Overall, this big push towards movies about superheroes… you can only make so many good ones that feel truly original, and yet they always try to reach as many people as possible, which sometimes gets in the way of quality, specificity, or real point of view.”

Many fans will agree with these comments and right now both Marvel and DC are in the process of making big changes in an effort to start making great movies and get fans excited about watching these types of movies again. Paltrow went on to explain his reasoning, adding:

“I grew up doing those things [mid-budget] movies and sometimes I complain that I look back at some movies I made in the ’90s and think they just wouldn’t get made now. You get more artistic diversity when there’s less at stake and people can, in a sense, express their true voice and make a film the way they want to make it. And I think those are generally the most resonant ones.”

I would love to see Hollywood go back to that place. While there’s always room for great tent poll films, I think studios should start focusing more on mid-budget films that tell great stories! Some studios are doing this, but we need more to have a real impact.

What are your thoughts on the current state of Hollywood and what has Paltrow said about superhero movies?
