Director Adam Wingard has more to say about his upcoming Monsterverse film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In this latest interview with SFX Magazine, he revealed what the film was inspired by Michael Mannis the gritty 1981 action thriller Thiefand compare James Caanhis character in Kong. He explained:
“There’s something about Kong’s iconography that really connects with people. It’s sort of a representation of our most basic instincts and our vulnerabilities as human beings. Kong is really the ultimate male hero in movies. They just don’t make them more like this.
“A big influence on me in this respect was one of my favorite films, Michael Mann’s Thief. James Caan’s performance is one of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s the most masculine performance, in my opinion, in history of cinema. He’s got his hairy chest and his hairy arms and everything, and he’s a real badass. He doesn’t take shit from anyone. He’s good at what he does, but ultimately what really defines him, what It makes him feel really masculine, it’s the fact that he’s in touch with his sensitive side too. He wants to have a child, and it’s his relationship with the woman that you really remember.”
Thief follows the story of Frank, a highly skilled professional safecracker played by Caan. Despite his experience, Frank longs for a normal life, which leads him to pursue a legitimate career and start a family. However, his criminal past catches up with him when he is forced to carry out one last robbery by a powerful mobster. As Frank struggles to maintain his personal and professional integrity, he finds himself caught up in a web of betrayal and violence that threatens everything he holds dear.
The director then compared Caan to Kong:
“Kong is similar. He’s masculine because he’s also a sensitive guy. In this film it’s all about his loneliness and his desire to find others. We played with that in the last film, about his relationship with this little girl, Jia What really, really highlights what makes Kong such an interesting and very macho character is the sensitivity that he can have. So there’s a lot of interesting things about him as a character that are fun to explore.”
In the upcoming film, “The Epic Battle Continues! Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse film follows the explosive clash of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new adventure that pits the all-powerful Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal unknown threat hidden in our world, which puts their very existence… and ours to the test. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delves further into the stories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, uncovering the mythical battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and forever bind them to humanity.
The film is the protagonist Rebecca Sala (Godzilla vs. Kong), Brian Tyree Henry (Godzilla vs. Kong), Dan Stevens (Legion), Kaylee Hottle (Godzilla vs. Kong), Alex Felci (The Batman) AND Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
