Alex Proyas Continues to Share Disgust with THE CROW Remake – ‘Fan Response Says It All’

The director of the original 1994 film The Raven he continues to talk about the upcoming remake and share his thoughts on how dissatisfied he is with it. He’s been talking about it a lot for years, ever since Hollywood began its long journey towards realization.

He believes the whole thing is disrespectful to the end times Brandon Leeit is memory and legacy. This is the same argument he’s been making for a long time. Now he shared on Facebook:

“I really take no joy in seeing negativity about other directors’ work. And I’m sure that the cast and crew really had all the good intentions, as we all do in any film. So I’m sorry to say more on this topic, but I think the fan response speaks volumes. THE CROW is not just a film. Brandon Lee died while he was making it, and it was completed as a testament to his lost glory and the tragic loss of him. It is his legacy. That’s how he should stay.”

Yes, fans are not happy with this movie and the negative reaction was quite strong. Proyas had previously mocked Skarsgård in the comments and on the reboot as a whole by saying things like, “I guess he’s supposed to be a bad idiot with all those tattoos and werewolves and skulls on his jacket.” He added: “Well, at least the photos gave me a good laugh. For a moment I thought they were going to ruin Brandon Lee’s legacy.”

He had previously spoken out against it in a heartfelt message explaining why the film shouldn’t have happened, saying:

WHY I THINK THE CROW SHOULDN’T BE REDONE

I had the privilege of knowing Brandon Lee: he was a young, immensely gifted actor with a great sense of humor and a bright future ahead of him. I also had the privilege of being able to call him a friend. Our working relationship as actor/director has gone beyond simple collaboration. We made a film together that touched many people.

I didn’t get a “film from” credit on THE CROW. I wanted it to be Brandon’s film, because he was it, and because he wouldn’t be able to make any more films. He brought all his passion into the film and it remained his legacy. It’s a film I know he would have been proud of.

I finished the film for Brandon, struggling through the pain, along with the very supportive cast and crew who all loved Brandon, to complete it in his absence. We were filled with the strength of Brandon’s spirit and his inspiration. Not only Brandon’s wonderful work as an actor and director, but also as a man whose humanity he touched us.

THE CROW wouldn’t be a film worth “remaking” if it weren’t for Brandon Lee. If it weren’t for Brandon you might never have heard of this touching underground comic. It’s Brandon’s movie. I believe it’s a special case where Hollywood should simply let it stand as a testament to one man’s immense talent and ultimate sacrifice – and not let others rewrite that story or add to it. I know there have been sequels and TV shows and whatnot, but the idea of ”rebooting” this story and the original character – a character that Brandon brought to life at too great a cost – seems wrong to me.

Please let this remain Brandon’s movie.

Movie stars Bill Skarsgard (It), singer/actor FKA Twigs, Danny Houston (30 days of night), Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A son), AND Giordano Bolger (The Woman King).

In the reboot: “Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when demons from her dark past reach them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric decides to seek ruthless revenge on their killers, crossing the worlds of the living and the dead to make right the wrongs.

This version of the film comes from the director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman, Ghost in the shell) from a screenplay by Zach Baylin (King Richard) AND Will Schneider. The is based on James O’Barris the original graphic novel that gave rise to a previous film franchise.

The film will be released on June 7, 2024.
