The THUNDERCATS movie gets an update from director Adam Wingard

It’s been years since there’s been any kind of update on the live-action ThunderCats film that was developed by the director Adam Wingard. This is a project I was excited about until I saw how Wingard handled the Godzilla and King Kong films at Legendary. But maybe ThunderCats it will be more its speed. I don’t know, I just want to have a lot of fun ThunderCats movie!

While the director is making the rounds promoting his latest film, Godzilla x Kong: The New EmpireDuring an interview with io9, the director offered a little update on what’s going on ThunderCatssaid:

“Simon [Barrett] and I’m still actively working on the script. We finished our last draft pretty much right as I was starting production on this film and we had to put everything on hold. [But] We are currently actively working on it again. So whether that means that’s the next thing I do or… [not], I’m not sure. But it’s definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script.

One of the other film projects Wingard is working on is the film Face/Off, and speaking about that, he said:

“Almost halfway through production [on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire], we were finishing the draft of the script and since we were both too busy working on other things, there was a plan to rewrite it and we chose a writer to work on it. And then the writers’ strike happened and that delayed things. It’s still dormant at the moment, so I think the plan will be for the writer to keep working, and whenever the draft is finished, Simon and I will pick it up and give it another try.

So, it seems like that’s a little out of the ordinary. When we were talking previously ThunderCatsthe writer Simon Barret:

“I will say this, our adaptation of ThunderCats is going to be really, really amazing. I don’t think people are prepared at all for the time that Adam Wingard spent thinking about ThunderCats. They’re not ready for Adam’s ThunderCats movie. It’s going to destroy.”

Wingard previously spoke out about the project and spoke about the long road he took to make it happen, saying:

“Thundercats is a dream project for me. When I was in high school, I was obsessed with it. You would think at that point, I was a little too old, that my years of obsession with Thundercats would have started when I was six. My real obsession with Thundercats came in high school, when I decided I wanted to be a director and pushed in that direction… I actually spent the majority of my year in 10th grade, I completely screwed it up. I didn’t pay attention in school, I got terrible grades. And the reason? I wrote the script for Thundercats throughout my 10th grade year. And I was writing it by hand.

He went on to explain what he plans to do with the film, sharing:

“This is a great passion for me. No one on this planet knows or has thought as much about the Thundercats as I do. They gave me the reins. I saw it as an opportunity to make a new kind of fantasy and sci-fi spectacle film that people had never seen before. It has a rich mythology; the characters are fantastic. Colors. I want to make a Thundercats movie that takes you back to the aesthetic of the ’80s. I don’t want to reinvent their look; I want them to look like the Thundercats. I don’t want to do it live either. I don’t want it to be like Cats, I don’t want those kinds of problems, no disrespect to that director who I’m not going to throw under the bus any more than everyone else has. I want to make a movie you’ve never seen before. A hybrid CGI film that has a hyper-real feel and somehow bridges the gap between cartoons and CGI. That’s the starting point and Simon Barrett and I are getting into the script now.”

While I didn’t like what Wingard did with Godzilla and Kong, if he actually gets the opportunity to bring ThunderCats to life on the big screen, I hope he makes a film that fans will love. Wingard and Barret had also worked together before You’re next, The guestAND Blair witch.

You think they will deliver a great result ThunderCats movie?
