While we all wait to see what film project Christopher Nolan will take on the next role, he recently revealed that he would like to act in the horror genre. When a fan asked him if he would ever consider making a horror film, he said:
“I would like to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror movie requires a really great idea. And those are few and far between. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that.”
In a previous interview with The Telegraph, Nolan revealed that he was developing a horror film at one point, and that horror film ended up being Start. The initial concept comes from the idea of subconscious terror. He explained:
“At first I was thinking about a horror film, but it ended up being this project. I was looking for a device where dreams would become important to the story, and the thought that someone could invade the space of your dreams and steal something. This idea is extremely compelling for me. The concept that dreams feel real while we’re in them is the basis of the entire film.”
This sounds like it would have been a really cool and interesting technological riff on A Nightmare on Elm Street. There’s something certainly wild there, and well… the movie turned out to be pretty crazy in the end! But this gives us an idea of his thinking when it comes to horror.
When Nolan makes a horror film, it will be really interesting to see what kind of story he will tell and what kind of elements he will incorporate. Nolan also talked about what he finds interesting in the horror genre, saying:
“But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view. It’s also one of the few genres where studios make a lot of these films, and they’re films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have many of the qualities that Hollywood is generally very reluctant to put into films, but this is a genre where it’s allowed.”
I hope Nolan enters the world of horror with his next film. I hope he has an idea in mind that he would like to move forward with. We’ll just have to wait and see.
