The House of Representatives has approved a ban on TikTok in the United States

The US House of Representatives has voted in favor of a bill banning TikTok in the United States. I’m not surprised by any of this as the government has been trying to ban it for years.

The bill will now have to be approved in the Senate and then signed by President Biden. After that, TikTok owner ByteDance will have five months to sell the company. After that date, companies like Apple and Google will not be allowed to offer the app in their stores.

It has not yet been determined whether ByteDance will sell TikTok or whether the company will simply shut down operations in the United States. According to CNN, TikTok is currently used by more than 170 million Americans and everyone is wondering what will happen from here on out.

The whole reason for the ban is because TikTok is owned by a Chinese company and lawmakers in the United States argue that the Chinese government would be able to spy on citizens through the country’s intelligence laws. There is much concern that TikTok could end up proving to be a threat to national security.

TikTok opposed the legislation, and the app’s influencers called their state representatives to try to save the app. People have created businesses thanks to TikTok, it’s how many people make a living, so it’s understandable that they are afraid that the app could very well be shut down in the US
