Margaret Ridley had an emotional run playing Rey in Star Wars universe over the course of three years and finished that run with 2019 The Rise of Skywalker. Regardless of what you thought of the sequel trilogy, the films made a lot of money and the popularity of the franchise was still going strong. However, Ridley recently shared that once he finished, he initially didn’t receive many job offers.
While talking about his stalled career at SXSW over the weekend, he said, “There weren’t a lot of offers coming in. It’s not that there weren’t any… I remember finishing and thinking, ‘Oh, this is quiet and strange.’ “
I can only imagine there were a lot of questions running through her head, maybe even a little panic. She’s just come off one of the biggest, most exciting Hollywood gigs an actor can get, and then, after eight years, she stops and you’re just waiting to see what happens next.
Then the pandemic hit and the entire film and television industry shut down and no offers were coming in. He said: “So it was a very strange time to sit with a quiet and, honestly, painful moment in my life.”
But eventually the offers started coming in and work became stable for her. She continued not to say, “It was really challenging and amazing and I got to do so many different things for so many different people. It was a different exploration of myself and my career.”
She’s also returning to the franchise that launched her career to reprise her role as Rey in future films, which she’s excited about. But it turns out he wasn’t very comfortable playing his character Star Wars until you get to the third film. She said: “Honestly, I had to do the third movie until I was like, ‘OK, I’m fine.’ I deserve to be here.’”
Ridley’s other upcoming film projects include Young woman and the sea, The women at the castle, CleanerAND We bury the dead.
