James Gunn on Filming Early SUPERMAN Scenes Where ‘Superman Escapes into the Ice Fortress’

James Gunn he is currently filming his own Superman film, and the first scenes he is working on will be shot in Svalbard, Norway. This is the location of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. Speaking to a local newspaper, Gunn also shared some details about the sequences currently being filmed, saying:

“We filmed the first scenes, which is when Superman escapes into the ice fortress. We wanted somewhere that was beautiful and felt like you were in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at different places in the world. But there were a lot of things that made us sell Svalbard compared to other places. First of all there is the natural beauty. But also the fact that here you will find a varied landscape that you will not find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.”

A photo from the Norwegian set has been making the rounds online, which you can see below. How damn cool it would be to work as a location scout in the film industry.

Gunn went on to say that a few people came to the set, but good luck seeing David Corenswet dressed as Superman. Security is tight.

“We had some who were curious, yes, who stayed and watched. But that’s fine. And that’s a big difference. Because being interested in just watching is something completely different than when you have people trying to sneak onto the set to shoot photos from which they can earn money by selling online.”

Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman; Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio, in the role of Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
