Matt Reeves is currently preparing for production Batman: Part II. We don’t really know anything about the story it will tell, but The Penguin the series is said to lead to this and Hush is said to be the villain.
While waiting for any further updates, Jeffrey Wright talks about his character Jim Gordon and where he hopes his story will go in the franchise. Speaking to Discussing Film, he said:
“Well, it’s probably not a good idea to get too far ahead of Matt [Reeves]. One of the things I talked about with him a little bit is that, playing the role, I wondered about his private life and I wonder about people who have the level of responsibility that he has, with that public face of righteousness and goodness. .”
“I wonder what’s underneath Commissioner Gordon because Batman wears his cowl but, in a way, Gordon also wears a mask. Gordon represents justice in a way through his kind of righteousness, not saintliness, and I I wonder what might be behind that mask with the sacrifices he might have to make because he gives so much to this public figure and his civic duty.”
“What does all this have to do with him, under his mask? These are questions that might be interesting to explore, but we’ll see. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to read and dive in again, but I know that as far as you know at the moment. We’ll get there!”
These are definitely things that would be interesting to explore and it seems like something Reeves would incorporate into the story, but we’ll have to wait and see!
Wright had previously spoken about his role as Jim Gordon and, when asked what it was like bringing the character to life on screen, he said:
“Well, I think the word ‘grounded’ is exactly what we were looking for. It’s what attracted me to Matt’s vision after reading the script. What’s notable about our film is that, and it’s very gratifying to have been a part of it , is that the script was completely realized on screen. Matt had a very specific vision and tone that he wanted to execute, and we pulled it off. It was so true; it was grounded and authentic. It was tangible.
“So for Gordon, still a lieutenant as we’re in the second year of Batman’s story, he’s literally grounded as he’s still a street cop and that partnership with Batman, who we celebrate as the world’s greatest detective going back to basics of his character in the comics, really flourishes under this construct that Matt created. It was really inspiring for me and I think we’re going to see Gordon and Batman and their partnership in a way that maybe we haven’t seen in previous versions of the story.”
Wright is fantastic as Jim Gordon and it will be interesting to see how his arc continues to play out in the Reeves/Batman franchise.
