Teaser trailer for Toho’s animated film project GHOST CAT ANZU

GKids has released the first teaser trailer for Toho’s next animated film project The ghost cat Anzu. directors Yoko Kuno AND Nobuhiro Yamashita are overseeing the Japanese release, which also comes from Japan’s Shin-Ei Animation and France’s Miyu Productions.

The story of the film focuses on Karin, 11 years old, who is abandoned by her father at the home of her grandfather, a monk in a small town in the Japanese countryside. Her “Her grandfather asks Anzu, her cat, her ghost, jovial and helpful even if rather capricious, to take care of her. The meeting of these two strong characters creates sparks, at least at the beginning…”

The film is a 2D rotoscopic animated film starring Mirai Moriyama, who voices Anzu, and Noa Gotō, who voices Karin. Both played their characters in live-action and their performances became a reference for the animators, both their dialogue and their movements were converted into the final footage. This sounds like a delightful movie!

The film is based on the manga by Takashi Imashiro and will be released in Japan in July 2024. Ghost Cat Anzu will be released in select US theaters later in 2024.
