X-MEN ’97 gets a TV-14 rating and one team member is revealed to be non-binary

It looks like the one from Marvel Animation X-Men ’97 the revival series will be a little darker than the series X-Men: The Animated Series that we grew up with. It was also revealed that one of the key members of the X-Men team will be portrayed as non-binary.

The first trailer for the series came out last week and it seemed like fans were really excited for this series to return. For the most part, fans liked what they saw! Now we’re learning that the Disney+ series has been rated TV-14, which is equivalent to PG-13. I thought it was worth pointing out because the original series was rated TV-Y7.

An official description reads: “This program contains material that most parents would find unsuitable for children under 14 years of age.” Hence, we can expect the series to explore more mature and hard-hitting themes.

It makes sense that they have reached the maturity level because all the fans of the original series are much older now and those are fans are the majority of people who will tune in to watch this series.

Then, in the latest issue of Empire Magazine, they revealed an interesting update on the shape-shifting character Morph. It was revealed that the character will be portrayed as non-binary.

According to the report, X-Men ’97 will feature a “lighter take on the character, who is non-binary and has an interesting friendship with Wolverine.” Morph was not portrayed this way X-Men: The Animated Series or the comics, so this change surprised many fans. At the same time, Morph is a mutant who can transform into both male and female characters.

It was also revealed that Morph’s history with Mister Sinister will also “come into play” over the course of the series. The character apparently died in a battle against the Senintel. He survived, however, and found himself falling under the influence of Mister Sinister and separated from the X-Men.

Showrunner Beau De Mayo commented Morph, who will now be dubbed JP Karliaksaying, “He really set the stakes and had a very interesting relationship with the team because of the trauma.”

X-Men’97 “revisits the iconic ’90s era as the X-Men, a band of mutants who use their mysterious gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a new dangerous and unexpected future.”

X-Men ’97 will premiere on Disney+ on March 20.
