It was first announced that the Superman and Lois the series was canceled and some fans blamed The CW for the series’ demise. Well, it turns out that it was actually Warner Bros. and DC Studios who decided that the series had to end so as not to compete with James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.
This report comes from The Wrap, which states that executives at The CW looked at their slate of original series and decided that only four were worth pursuing, including All Americans, All American: Homecoming, WalkerAND Superman and Lois. The CW’s head of entertainment Brad Schwartz She said:
“We turned to our partners at CBS and Warner Bros. and said, ‘We’re partners on these things, you sell them around randomly. Here’s our economics…’ We can’t continue to lose the amount of money that we had in the shows. Very collaboratively, everyone came together and we brought these four shows forward.”
As for the reasoning behind why Superman and Lois was shut down, the report goes on to explain that regardless of the series’ performance, the decision to end the show was made by Warner Bros., and not The CW. Schwartz confirmed: “They don’t want a competing Superman product on the market,” referring to Superman: Legacy.
With James Gunn and Peter Safran coming to lead the charge at DC Studios, it’s no surprise that they would want to walk away from a project like Superman and Lois, which they really have no connection or creative input with. It just doesn’t seem to fit with what they’re planning with the DC Universe, so obviously it would be canceled.
