Ian McDiarmid talks Emperor Palpatine having sex and defends his return in THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

If you’ve never thought about Star Wars evil emperor Palpatine has sex, you will today. Sorry, but during a recent interview with Empire, actor Ian McDiarmid shared some of his thoughts on Emperor Palpatine championing his return Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as well as the character having sex.

Speaking about Palpatine’s return to the franchise, which many fans didn’t like, he said:

“A lot of people said it was ridiculous. Of course he was dead at the end of Return of the Jedi! And frankly, I think George thought he killed me too. But JJ thought it would be a good idea – I wasn’t going to argue with him. I had the feeling that Palpatine always had a plan B – probably even a plan C, D, E and F, and he was an expert in cloning, so…”

Yes, but it was still ridiculous and would have been much more interesting if they had revealed a different original villain. But McDiarmid believes this whole grand scheme makes Palpatine stand out as the ultimate cinematic villain, saying:

“The thing that I’m happiest about, and you know, this only came to a head when they asked me to come back for The Rise of Skywalker, is that every single evil act in the entire Star Wars franchise is directly or indirectly up to that character. This is total evil, and it’s strangely satisfying as a story arc. I feel lucky to have been able to do it – and other movie villains now have to compete with this.”

There are other evil villains in the franchise, but I get what he’s saying. The conversation then leads to the existence of Margaret Ridleyit’s Rey, who happens to be Palpatine’s niece. So, naturally, McDiarmid opens up about sex with Palpatine:

“Please do not pursue this line too vigorously. But yes, it does [have sex]. It’s a horrible idea to think of Palpatine having sex in any form. But then, of course, maybe he didn’t. Maybe he has everything to do with midi-chlorians – and don’t ask me what they are. Never trust your niece. This is the shirt that Palpatine made. Shortly after his death.”

There were many different ways they could have ended the sequel trilogy, but bringing Palpatine back was one of the least interesting. Anyway, what do you think of McDiarmid’s comments here?
