Disney is currently working on two major Moana projects. The first to be released is the recently announced animated sequel, Vaiana 2, a film initially planned as a sequel series, but after seeing the footage, Disney CEO Bob Iger said it was so good that it deserved a theatrical release. We’ll see that movie this Thanksgiving.
As for the other Moana project, this is the live-action film that has been in the works for a while now. It was previously unconfirmed whether or not the main voice actors would return to their roles in the live-action film, but now some of them have confirmed one way or another.
In a recent interview with ET, Dwayne Johnson he confirmed this aside from his reprisal as the character Maui, a composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) will also return to score the second film. Johnson also said that while the original Moana, Auli’i Cravalho, she will not return to play the young princess, a new actress has been found. She joked:
“One of the most exciting things was finding our Moana and how exciting that was. The global quest to find our Moana – which – between you and me, we have found – we won’t tell you yet. [It’s] very exciting. Lin Manuel Miranda is coming back. We’re making the music. Tommy Kail is our director, who directed Hamilton. You get everyone together and you want to put the best team together and then you really go for it.”
As for what fans can expect from the film, which Johnson said he’s “excited” to begin filming later this year, the actor teased: “The scale should be beautiful.”
When asked about the animated sequel, Johnson responded by saying:
“It’s really exciting. I can’t wait for the fans to see the film, the technology, the effects, the cutting edge. We all really tried. We thought if we wanted to make a sequel to something so beloved, go for it. You also have the advantage and beauty of the ocean Moana… the ocean is alive, so when the ocean has a heartbeat and a pulse, it’s a completely different thing. I can’t wait. All new music, which we’re excited about.”
I loved the first film and can’t wait to see the new films in the saga. Which Moana Which film are you most looking forward to?
