Disney has thrown fans a curve ball, as the studio released a surprise promotional video revealing this Moana 2 is headed to theaters this Thanksgiving! Disney CEO Bob Iger said of the project: “Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise and we can’t wait to bring you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 will hit theaters this November.
The official description of the film reads:
“The epic animated musical from Walt Disney Animation Studios Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new journey with Moana, Maui and an all-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her explorer ancestors, Moana must travel to the distant seas of Oceania and dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything he has ever faced.
The film was originally developed as a series, but as Iger explained during the company’s earnings call on Wednesday, “we were impressed with what we saw and felt it deserved a theatrical release.” He also confirmed that the previously announced live-action adaptation of the film starring Johnson will be directed by Hamiltonby Thomas Kail, is still in development.
The film will be the fifth cinematic sequel from Walt Disney Animation Studios Australia’s rescuers, Fantasy 2000, Ralph breaks the InternetAND Frozen II.
Dave Derrick Jr.who was story director for Strange world and worked in the art department on other Disney films such as the original Moana AND Enchantment, will direct the film. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, who won a Grammy for them Unofficial Bridgerton musical, will write original songs with Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i. Mancina and Foa’i worked on the music for the first film with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will not return for the sequel. There’s no word yet on whether Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will return to voice Moana and Maui.
