AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Showrunner Says Series Will Love GAME OF THRONES Fans

Avatar: The Last Airbenderthe showrunner Alberto Kim recently spoke about the series and its mature tone. He explains that when they were developing the show, they wanted to make sure it not only appealed to fans of the original Nickelodeon series, but also to… game of Thrones fans.

Kim described the live-action series as “a remix, not a cover” and that the creative team knew it “couldn’t be just for kids”.

He went on to explain during an interview with IGN: “Seasons 2 and 3 have much more mature themes than, say, season 1. So for us it was about finding the right balance, making sure we were true to the DNA of the ‘original, but at the same time we had to make it a serialized drama on Netflix.”

He added: “It also had to appeal to people who are big fans of it game of Thrones so, he had to feel grounded and mature and adult in that way too. This is the tightrope we have to walk.”

Director Jabbar Raisani also spoke about the show’s tone, saying, “When it comes to finding the tone, I mean, we have the script, and then we’re on set, and it’s like, ‘Let’s do this version.’ And then, ‘Okay, let’s do something sillier. Let’s do something sillier. Okay, now let’s take this back.’ So we just made sure we had options that we could actually choose from a range in post [production] instead of saying, “Oh no, now we have this.” It’s too silly and it’s our only choice, so what do we do?’ So just protect yourself to make sure you can shape the tone.”

I understand what they’re trying to do, but they don’t really need to emulate game of Thrones For Avatar: The Last Airbender. All they have to do is tell a strong story like the original animated series did! When they start talking about how they would have liked game of Thrones-if he does, it makes me worry, because they shouldn’t think about it game of Thrones when they are doing a Avatar: The Last Airbender series.

This makes me wonder if this is why the original creators abandoned the live-action series.

The series synopsis reads: “Set in a war-torn Asian world, where some people can ‘bend’ one of the four classical elements: water, earth, fire or air. Aang is the Avatar, the only one capable of bending all the elements, and is destined to bring world peace to the Fire Nation. With her new companions Katara (Kiawentiio Tarbell ) and Sokka (Ian Ousley), Aang sets out to master the elements while being pursued by the exiled Fire Nation Prince Zuko (Daniel Dae Kim), who seeks to regain his honor by capturing the Avatar.”

I’ve included all the casting and character details below. The series will premiere on February 22, 2024.
