When Exoprimal released last year, it received somewhat mixed reviews and the game lacked depth and variety. While the game’s major issues haven’t really been resolved this season, there’s plenty more to play with, plenty of hours of grinding to do, and some relatively new experiences that are worth coming back for.
Exoprimal is a team-based cooperative shooter where players work together to take down hundreds of dinosaurs raining down from the sky with lots of guns, explosives, lasers, and melee weapons. It’s a lot of fun and totally ridiculous, but Exoprimal has fun and leans into the wildness of the game. The progression of player-controlled suits and the various things players can unlock make gaming sessions rewarding every time you log into the game. The main problem (if anything) is that there is only one game mode where a player enters and plays again and again to progress in online stats, story, and player rewards. This can get extremely repetitive, but at least the moment-to-moment gameplay is pretty fun. Overall, it’s a lot of fun, but after unlocking a lot of things and playing through the “story”, there’s not much to do.
This brings us to season 3. This season is filled with more than just cool cosmetics. New monsters, new encounters, and some serious surprises have been added. We also have a new location and new modules to spice up and shake up the gameplay. Finally, the biggest addition to the game is the four β variants. While more would be great, leveling up and learning about four new variations is fun enough for now.
The season also brings Monster Hunter into the mix. Many of this season’s cosmetics are based on Monster Hunter, which can be wild and strange, almost to the point of not fitting thematically. However, the skins are well designed and worth the price of the season pass. Furthermore, one of the most iconic monsters, Rathalos, appears in the game and it is exciting to fight him.
While this game may not have much variety in terms of gameplay, the progression system is rewarding and deep enough to keep players engaged. Season 3 is a great time to jump in and enjoy a wonderfully incorporated crossover with tons of new content including new enemies, new suits, and new ways to play.
