Margot Robbie addresses BARBIE’s Oscar snub and talks about the film’s cultural impact

While the Barbie the film earned eight Oscar nominations, including best picture, fans are still baffled by the fact that Margot Robbie and director Gretta Gerwig they were not nominated for best actress and best director. During a recent panel at a special SAG screening, Robbie addressed the situation by saying:

“There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re so lucky. Obviously I think that Greta should be nominated director, because what she has done is a once-in-a-lifetime thing in her career, what she has accomplished, she truly is. But it’s been an incredible year for all films.”

Robbie went on to say that he is “beyond thrilled to have eight Oscar nominations, it’s so incredible. All the accolades they’ve received is just incredible, as is the Best Picture recognition.” He also talked about the cultural impact of the film and how it became a true phenomenon:

“I just suspect he’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than this movie, it’s bigger than our industry. We decided to do something that could change the culture, influence the culture, just have some kind of impact. And it has already done so, and in part, much more than we ever imagined. And that’s really the greatest reward that could come from all of this.”

Robbie then shared some stories about how he would listen in theater bathrooms to audience reactions to the film. He also talked about a time when he was in a pub in Scotland and overheard a group of men on a stag trip discussing the film. He shared:

“He was really fascinating. There were people at the table who refused to see the Barbie movie. One guy said to me, ‘Man, it’s a cultural moment, don’t you want to be part of the culture?’ And the other guy said, “I’ll never see him,” and finally he wanted to see him. It was a whole thing.

Robbie said she actually walked up to the group to say hello and said, “It took a whole minute for them to realize, and I was practically out the door. And then they said, ‘Ohhhh!’ It was very funny. People’s reactions to the film have been the greatest reward of this whole experience, whether it’s experiencing a moment like that, or listening to it in bathrooms, or seeing what people write online, or even just seeing how much pink I can see. look in this room right now.”

The actress then explained how this experience with Barbie is unlike anything she’s ever experienced before:

“I’ve never taken part in something like this. Not like that. I’ve done comic book stuff and that got a great reaction, but this felt very different to me. It still looks very different. And I can’t think of a time when a movie has had this effect on culture. And it’s great to be in the eye of the storm.”

It’s truly amazing how this happens Barbie the movie blew up as it did! Nobody expected this and it was really cool to see it happen.
