The SPIDER-MAN EL MUERTO universe film returns to development without Bad Bunny

Two years ago it was announced that an El Muerto the film was being made as part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe featuring the actor and musician Bad bunny attached to the star. Jonas Cuaron was to direct and the film’s screenplay was written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. Then, seven months ago, it was announced that the film had been pulled from Sony’s release schedule, and a week later there was news that Sony was moving forward with the film without Bad Bunny in the title role. The singer reportedly had to withdraw from the project due to his touring schedule, but he was very vocal about his disappointment.

At the time, it was from a lesser-known source that we learned that Sony still wanted to move forward, but a new report has confirmed the news.

In a recent report from Variety detailing all the Sony Marvel projects currently in the works, we learned that the El Muerto film is back in the works. This was verified in a small mention at the end of the article, which reads:

At CinemaCon 2022, the studio brought Bad Bunny on stage to announce “El Muerto,” which would follow a superhuman luchador played by the singer. But its mixed tour and script revisions have now put the project back in development, without a star in the books.

So we can deduce from that moment that the film is moving forward without a star attached yet, and the script has received some revisions. He continued saying:

Regardless of whether “El Muerto” gets made or not, its standalone nature is the model Sony is applying to comic book movies. Amid unease that cinematic universes may have become too expansive, Sony seeks to woo viewers through contained narratives — you know, like blockbusters used to.
