I have some interesting news! The remastered black and white version of Godzilla minus one will have a theatrical run in the US! This version of the film, which is titled Godzilla-1.0/C (Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color), was originally announced for Japan only, so the fact that Toho International is bringing it to the US is awesome!
Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will be released in American theaters on Friday January 26th and will remain in theaters until February 1st. The black and white version was released in Japan on January 12.
Takashi Yamazakidirector, screenwriter and visual effects supervisor, said in a statement: “I was very happy that North American audiences enthusiastically welcomed Godzilla minus oneand now I’m very happy to be able to release a black and white version for North America too. Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will bring a new and visceral experience to audiences.”
The director worked extensively on this remaster as a cut-for-cut production instead of making it monochrome for its own sake. The director previously said:
“We are now able to announce Godzilla-1.0/C, which we have been working on for a long time. Rather than making it monochrome, it’s cut for cut, I had them make changes taking full advantage of the various mattes, as if they were creating a new film What I was aiming for was a style that seemed taken from the masters of monochrome photography. We managed to bring out the skin texture and scenery details hidden in the photographed data. Then a scary Godzilla appeared, just like the one in the documentary. By eliminating color, a new sense of reality emerges. Please live and resist further fear in the theater.”
It will be amazing to be able to experience this movie in a whole new way!
So far, the film has grossed nearly $51 million at the U.S. box office, making it the highest-grossing Japanese live-action or animated film released in the United States and the No. 5 Highest Grossing Non-English Language Films at the US Box Office.
