Many fans wondered why the director Adam Winger it would change Godzilla’s iconic bright blue color to pink. Godzilla fans didn’t seem too happy when the King of the Monsters appeared pink in the first trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
During an interview with Total Film, Winger offered an explanation as to why he went pink with Godzilla and it all came down to the toys. He said:
“Every time I talked to visual artists, what I told them was, ‘I want the color palette of this movie to feel like the experience of what it was like to walk down a toy aisle in the ’80s, when there were ThunderCats , GI Joe and Transformers.’ There was just this orgasmic feeling. So many colors and textures. That’s what I wanted to bring to this film. This new heightened reality. I wanted to find out: you can have that exaggerated experience in the toy aisle, but then find a way to ground it in reality?”
First of all, nothing about this movie will be rooted in reality. Apparently Winger’s goal was to turn this movie into a silly live Saturday morning cartoon. The film will be mindless entertainment for children to enjoy. There’s a place for that, but if fans want to see real Godzilla projects that are actually good, we’ll just have to look to Toho to keep the true vision of the Godzilla franchise alive.
I just don’t like how Winger downplayed it so much. It’s as if he has no knowledge or understanding of Godzilla’s history and the history and inspiration behind the creature. The director had previously spoken about this new version of Godzilla, saying:
“Particularly in the last film, I wanted Godzilla to have continuity, to be similar to King of the Monsters and Godzilla from 2014, but then I didn’t have the chance to make my version of Godzilla. So now I wanted to do different things with the thorns and trying different colors. I didn’t want it to just be random; it’s part of the story.”
I once pointed out that I was really excited about Winger coming into this franchise, but it didn’t do these characters justice.
In the upcoming film, “The Epic Battle Continues! Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse film follows the explosive clash of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new adventure that pits the all-powerful Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal unknown threat hidden in our world, which puts their very existence… and ours to the test. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delves further into the stories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, uncovering the mythical battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and forever bind them to humanity.
The film is the protagonist Rebecca Sala (Godzilla vs. Kong), Brian Tyree Henry (Godzilla vs. Kong), Dan Stevens (Legion), Kaylee Hottle (Godzilla vs. Kong), Alex Felci (The Batman) e Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be released in theaters on April 12, 2024.
