This was discovered recently Steven Yeun came out of Marvel Lightning, in which he was set to play The Sentry. The actor has now spoken out about his departure in a recent interview with Variety and confirmed that the Hollywood strikes were one of the reasons behind his decision to walk away from the Marvel film. He explained:
“I think for me, time passing and things changing have gotten me out of that situation. But Jake [Schreier]I know, he’ll do an incredible job.
It took many email drafts to make sure I conveyed the sincerity of how sorry I was to have to back out.
He went on to say, “I want to do a Marvel movie,” but he’s not sure when or if the opportunity will arise again. When asked what Marvel film he would like to work on next, he said:
“I think it’s too early to tell. I probably pissed off too many people who left, so I’ll just say, “Thanks for having me.”
“I have some ideas. But I heard if you put it out there, you’ll never get it, so I’ll keep it close to my chest.
It’s a shame that Yeun had to walk away from the film, but he obviously has other projects lined up that he’s a little more passionate and excited about. Lightning suspended production in May due to the WGA strike and has yet to begin filming.
The cast of Lightning includes Sebastiano Stan as Bucky Barnes who will lead the team, Davide Porto in the role of the Red Guardian, Julie Louis-Dreyfus as Countess Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as a US agent, Hannah John-Kamen in the role of Ghost, Olga Kurylenko like Taskmaster and of course Florence Pugh in the role of Elena Belova. Then, there is Harrison Fordwho takes on the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who will become President of the United States in Captain America: New World Order. Ayo Edebiri he also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.
The film is directed by Jake Schreier (Paper cities, joke), from a screenplay by Lee Sung Jin (Beef), Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow), AND Kurt Busiek. Thunderbolts is currently scheduled to release in theaters on July 25, 2025.
