This marks the second time Mann has openly praised the film.

Mann has always been considered a director with an eclectic taste in cinema. Throughout his career he has explored various genres and styles. This diversity is evident in his list of favorite films, which spans different eras and genres.

The battleship Potemkin (1925): Mann’s appreciation for the early pioneers of cinema is evident when he places Sergei Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin on his list. This masterpiece of silent cinema is celebrated for its revolutionary use of editing techniques. The film is a historical masterpiece that tells the gripping and tumultuous story of the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin, who rebel against oppressive officers during the 1905 Russian Revolution.

The asphalt jungle (1950): John Huston’s crime noir classic, known for its gritty portrayal of a robbery gone wrong. The film delves into the tangled world of crime and desperation, following a group of criminals who band together to plan and execute a meticulously detailed heist. Set against the gritty backdrop of a city, the complex motivations and moral dilemmas of the characters are central to the narrative. As the heist unfolds, tensions rise, alliances shift, and the audience is drawn into a web of suspense and moral ambiguity.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): Stanley Kubrick’s visionary masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, is a film that transcends the boundaries of traditional science fiction. A visionary and enigmatic science fiction epic, the film unfolds in four distinct acts, spanning prehistoric Earth to the edge of outer space, and weaves together a fascinating narrative about human evolution, artificial intelligence and extraterrestrial contact.

Avatars (2009): The film is a science fiction epic that transports audiences to the lush and visually stunning world of Pandora. The story revolves around Jake Sully, a paraplegic Marine, who is given the opportunity to inhabit an Avatar, a genetically modified hybrid of human and indigenous Na’vi species. As Jake immerses himself in the Avatar program, he becomes torn between the military agenda and his growing affinity with the Na’vi people and their way of life.

Mann’s admiration for James Cameron’S Avatars it’s obviously strong. In a previous 2012 Sight & Sound poll interview, Mann expressed his connection to the film. He once wrote: “Based on an entirely invented biosystem, Avatar is a brilliant synthesis of mythic tropes, with debts to Lévi-Strauss and Frazier’s ‘The Golden Bough’.” It flies because, simply, it amazes and transports.”

As we eagerly await Mann’s next directorial venture, we can only wonder how his evolving appreciation for cinema will continue to shape his future works.
