With Christmas arriving tomorrow, here’s a fun collection of Behind the Scenes and Making Of videos Joe Dante AND Steven Spielbergthe classic 1984 family Christmas horror film, Gremlins. I love this movie and it’s one that I enjoy revisiting every year around the holidays.
Despite all the times I’ve seen this film, there’s still behind the scenes footage and videos I’ve never seen, and it’s fascinating and beautiful to watch the filmmakers work to make this film. and listen to them talk about their vision of the film all those years ago. When the first video was made, it was in the middle of production and they had no idea that this film would become a classic.
There’s also a two-part video that shows the creative team looking back at the making of the film and also features some behind-the-scenes footage and photos from the film’s development.

Gremlins follows a young man named Billy Peltzer, who receives a mysterious and adorable creature called Mogwai as a Christmas present. However, there are strict rules for caring for your Mogwai, including not exposing it to bright light, not bathing it, and never feeding it after midnight. When these rules are accidentally broken, the Mogwai multiply and transform into mischievous and destructive creatures known as Gremlins, wreaking havoc on the small town of Kingston Falls. It’s up to Billy and his girlfriend, Kate, to stop the Gremlins and save their city from chaos.
It was a groundbreaking film that blended horror and comedy, attracting a large family audience. The use of puppets and animatronics for the Gremlins was a technical achievement at the time and set a precedent for future creature effects in films. The film also helped usher in the PG-13 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America due to its darker and more violent scenes that were not suitable for a traditional PG rating.
