While we wait Dave Filoni AND Jon Favreau to continue theirs Star Wars history in the New Republic era with The Mandalorian, AhsokaAND The Boba Fett bookFiloni previews the future of Grand Admiral Thrawn Star Wars. One of the most interesting things he points out is that the villain’s greatest enemy as he pursues chaos for the New Republic is Hera Syndulla.
Finoli explained to Empire: “[Thrawn’s] the foil throughout Rebels was Hera. Pitting the two generals against each other is something I find interesting.” So, it looks like we will eventually see these two characters have an epic showdown at some point. The final showdown could come in the movie Filoni is developing after the show sets it up Ahsoka Season 2.
Filoni also talked about another character he’d like to see join Thrawn, saying: “We created Captain Pellaeon in The Mandalorianand this is a character that goes well with Thrawn, so I would like to see them together.
With Filoni now serving as Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm, the guy can pretty much tell any story he wants! If he thinks these things are interesting, all he has to do is snap his fingers and make it so, which I’m sure he’s doing.
It will likely be a while before these characters return to action, and Ahsoka season 2 hasn’t even been officially announced. Even if that’s what we have The Acolyte AND Skeleton crew arriving in 2024, Andor Season 2 and, most likely, The Mandalorian Season 4 in 2025. So we probably won’t see another one Ahsoka series until 2026. It is unknown when the film, which will connect all these stories and characters together, will be released.
Speaking about the growing Mandalorian universe and how this journey has played out for the creative team, Filoni said, “I think for a long time, since I’ve learned how to work in this galaxy, it’s going to be a long game, and if things go well right, you can make more of your story. I think things worked out in a good way for us, and people liked the characters we made. So some opportunities presented themselves as we went along.”
Favreau also talked about being inspired by the different sources they drew from for the film saying, “When I was younger, we didn’t have movies, but there were comics, there were novels, things that are encapsulated in cinema.” [expanded universe] or legends. Clearly, there are decisions that have to be made to bring it all together, but for us, I think one thing we agree on is that the characters – as special as they are – the story has to drive who the characters are. “
Then there’s the fun aspect of creating a big story like this and figuring out which characters to include! Favreau said, “We joke that it’s like we’re playing with action figures, like, ‘What’s in the box? Let’s play with what’s in the box!’ And that’s what you do when you play and you’re a kid.”
Favreau went on to explain, “As we get deeper and deeper into this, you start to have to really map things out and figure out what that story is, and then have these characters realize what their growth cycle is and what their mythical hero is .” it’s the journey. These things have to fit together well. Otherwise it won’t feel like Star Wars.”
Favreau continued, “This has always been George’s foundation. He is a student of Joseph Campbell. How does it fit into the narrative of the hero’s journey? And so as we have more and more characters lined up, you have to figure out how these characters develop and whether it ultimately feels like a Star Wars story.”
What are your thoughts on Thrawn and Hera eventually facing each other?
