Superman: Legacy writer and director James Gunn has been bombarded with fan questions and requests regarding the upcoming film’s costumes, most of them specific to the Superman costume David Corenswet will wear.
At one point a fan contacted Gunn on his Threads account and asked him not to have the red shorts on the outside of the Superman costume. The director decided to answer this question and offer some insights into the costume and share his thoughts on this aspect of the film. He said:
“You wouldn’t believe the amount of begging and upset I get based on whether or not I may have trunks. To me, it’s not the most important aspect of Superman or his story. But how many strong feelings!”
He then shared his thoughts on the Superman costume and its many variations, and how practically all of his costumes are good:
“This may be an extreme point of view. The costume has changed in many, many ways over the years. They are all (or almost all) valid versions of Superman, with or without costume, with or without yellow S on the cape. with or without black around the S, with or without the mullet, and so on.
I couldn’t care less about Superman’s costume. Eventually, I know we’ll see a new Superman costume inspired by comic book costumes. I just want Gunn to make the Superman story!
Superman is one of the most beloved comic book superheroes ever created and I can’t wait to see what Gunn has planned for him. With all the characters Gunn will bring to the film, his plans are ambitious and I really want him to make something incredible, something that will blow the fans away.
The film is also the protagonist Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific, Skyler Gisondo like Jimmy Olsen, and María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer. There is also Sara Sampaiowho was cast as Eve Teschmacher, the assistant and sometimes lover of the scheming villain Lex Luthor.
Superman: Legacy will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman: Legacy will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
