Paramount Pictures is developing a big-budget animated Transformers film titled Transformers One, and it’s bringing together an all-star cast that includes Chris Hemsworth like Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, Scarlett Johansson in the role of Elita, Keegan-Michael Key in the role of Hornet, Jon Hamm like Sentinel Prime and Laurence Fishburne like Alpha Trion.
Keegan-Michael Key recently gave an interview, in which he teased his performance as the voice of Bumblebee in the film, saying that he’s putting a lot of himself into it. He told Collider:
“For playing Bumblebee, it’s fun, [there’s] there’s not much affectation in my voice. The director says, “I really want your voice.” I just want Keegan’s voice.’ So it’s kind of Keegan as Bumblebee. You will see. It’s interesting. Unlike [Migration]where I’m working in a dialect or I’m doing something like Super Mario Bros. where I’m really trying to disguise my voice, I’m putting a lot of myself into that.”
Hemsworth previously spoke about his approach to playing Optimus Prime, saying:
“The Optimus Prime you hear on screen in the movies is an older, more mature model. . . you know, he’s been around for many, many, many, many years. This is the kind of origin story of him, so it’s the younger version of him. So there’s some hints and colorings that hopefully resonate quite a bit with the Optimus Prime that we know, but it’s a young, different version of him. But he won’t be Australian”.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura she also previously spoke about her excitement for Hemsworth to play Prime, and praised his voice, saying:
“Also, it’s the imagination of our artists and our director, and one of the coolest things is that you actually give the characters voices. When we first hear Chris Hemsworth’s voice, you’re like, ‘God, he’s going to be a good Optimus!’ Obviously, he starts out as Orion Pax and doesn’t become Optimus for a while, so he’s not going to play, for most of the movie, what we think of as Optimus, Peter Cullen. So it’s that transition, and Chris’ voice has a timbre that… it makes sense that Peter Cullen takes over that voice, if you do, which is really cool, the fans will feel really great.
Transformers One is a prequel film that revolves around the origins of Cybertron and the story will focus on a young Optimus Prime and Megatron who are finding their way. It was previously revealed:
“This is… the origin story of young Megatron and young Optimus. If you know the origins, they started out as friends and over time things went their way and they ended up on two sides. So we’re telling young Optimus and the story of young Megatron. We’re really telling the origin story of all the Transformers, both who they were in the beginning, and how they grow up, and how they fall apart.”
This will be the first of what Di Bonaventura calls a “natural trilogy” and will explore “Cybertron in a way that you’ve never seen it, that nobody’s ever seen before.”
There’s a lot to be excited about in this movie! This is a story I’m excited to see come to life! The film is directed by Josh Cooley (Story of toys 4) from a script he wrote with Andrea Barrar AND Gabriele Ferrari.
Transformers One will be released in theaters on September 13, 2024. I am excited about this movie and have high hopes for it.
