Willem Dafoe recently shared his thoughts on what he’s seen from the director so far Roberto Eggers’ remake of Nosferatu. While speaking with IndieWire, Dafoe shared his excitement for the film and joked that it’s unlike anything he’s ever seen before! We also have a new photo to share with you thanks to Entertainment Weekly featuring the actor in the role of Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz.
Dafoe has starred in many wild and unique films in his career, including Egger The lighthouse, so for him to say that Nosferatu is unlike anything he’s ever seen before is a pretty impressive compliment. He said:
“[Eggers] it gets better and better, becomes more complex, more updated. It’s so clear when he works. It will open in December next year, which is a long way off. Trying to be optimistic, I think the studio must feel very strongly about it, because it’s a pretty tough slot, so I’m excited about it. I saw some footage while we were shooting and I can honestly say that, visually, it was unlike anything I’d ever seen. … The look and the way it was shot was amazing.”
Dafoe also revealed some details about his character, saying that he’s playing “kind of a Van Helsing character, but not exactly. So, it’s faithful to the source in some ways but also invented in some ways.” This will be a great and interesting character for him to play!
Eggers noted that von Franz’s character is a “crazy vampire hunter” in his new film and that he is “always loved and relatable.”
Speaking about the newly released image, which sees Dafoe surrounded by flames, the director said: “That sequence, as well as having real flames, had 2,000 real rats, which was challenging but also fun.”
The official plot reads: “Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale about the obsession of a tormented young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing unspeakable horrors in his wake.”
The rest of the cast includes Nicholas Hoult (Renfield), Emma Corrin (Deadpool 3), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), Simon McBurney (The evocation 2) AND Ralph Ineson (The Witch).
Speaking about the film, Eggers said: “It’s a scary movie. It’s a horror movie. It’s a gothic horror film. And I think there hasn’t been an old school gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while. And I think most audiences will find that to be the case.
Focus Features president Peter Kujawski said in a statement: “Robert Eggers’ bold direction is always a treat for fans, and we can promise that his Nosferatu is throwing a real Christmas party.”
The film will be released in theaters on December 25, 2024.
