Gary Oldman Says ‘Thank God’ for the HARRY POTTER and DARK KNIGHT Movies Because ‘They Saved Me’

Gary Oldmann he had a long and exciting career. With over 100 acting roles in her portfolio, she is a household name and most people remember some of the roles she has played over the years. The biggest franchises of her past are undoubtedly the Harry Potter films, as well as Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, which Oldman says came at exactly the right time in his life and ultimately saved him.

In a recent interview on The Drew Barrymore Show (via Variety), Oldman explained what these films mean to him and why they saved his career, as well as his relationship with his children.

“At 42 I woke up divorced and got custody [my] Boys. That, in itself, was… it was difficult because there was a change in the industry where a lot of productions were being made [filmed in] Hungary, Budapest, Prague, Australia, you know, all these places. So I turned down a lot of work.

He continued:

“Thank God for ‘Harry Potter.’ Thank God for “Harry Potter.” I’ll tell you, the two – “Batman” and “Harry Potter” – really saved me, because it meant I could do the least amount of work for the most amount of money and then stay at home with the kids.

During the filming of Christopher Nolan’s first Batman film, in 2005 Batman beginsOldman repeatedly flew back and forth from his Los Angeles home to the film’s London set to continue raising his children after the divorce.

“When we made the first Batman…London was Gotham’s stand-in. I made 27 round trips from Los Angeles. I would like to fly here for a day. I would do one shot a day. To Chris Nolan’s credit…he stayed on schedule. I would go home for three days. Come back for two. Go home for a weekend. Come back for a day… otherwise, I felt like my kids were being raised by a nanny.”

Oldman’s children speak highly of their father, who they themselves defended against their mother’s claims that Oldman was violent. After divorcing Donya Fiorentino in 2001, a judge found the charges against Oldman unfounded and he was granted custody of his children. His son, Gulliver, published a letter in support of his father after his ex-wife once again denounced abuse in their marriage after the actor won the Oscar in 2018 for The darkest hour. Gulliver called Oldman his “one true guiding light” and “only hero,” adding that he was “granted the grace” of being raised only by his father.
