Jon Favreau explains why he decided IRON MAN 2 would be the last Marvel film he would direct

Director Jon Favreau has the privilege of saying that he was the director who inaugurated the first film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His 2008 film Iron Man captured everyone’s idea that we were about to embark on the interconnected superhero journey we’d all been waiting for. Favreau returned to direct the 2010 sequel, Iron Man 2but that turned out to be the last film he would direct for the franchise.

The difference between the making of the two films was that the first one felt very indie, before the Marvel hype, when the cast said they improvised, took their time and had a lot of fun. But the second film was made after Disney bought the rights to Marvel, and the MCU was in full swing, meaning that the films had to be made in a certain order and in a particular time frame because the next intertwined story depended on the previous connection in the film. chain.

The production of Iron Man 2 it was detailed in the new book “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios” by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales and Gavin Edwards (via /Film). In the book, Favreau recalls how tired he was during the making of the challenging second film and how exhaustion discouraged him from continuing with the same series of films.

Favreau then explained:

“A lot of things have to come together for this movie to work. […] We are against it, from a program point of view. We gave ourselves less time on this film than last time, and it’s a much more ambitious project. This is part of the fear I had when we started so late; less than two years to do it, to make up this story. Set it up, prep it, film it, cut it, and do all the finishing touches. It’s not an excuse – we’re going to have to make a great film – but it puts everyone under tremendous stress.”

He noted that he, along with the editors and composers and everyone else, would have to work long, long, long days to get everything done. “It was ambitious in the beginning,” he said, “and now we have to push it to the max. There will be a lot of people who won’t sleep. Hundreds of people who won’t sleep.”

It’s a shame that these films were released so quickly and a great director felt like the cinematic experience was no longer worth making a film for this franchise. Iron Man was easily the best of Tony Stark’s standalone stories, and it seems like it was probably because the movie was made with less pressure and time constraints.
