A24 has announced that it is teaming up with Kojima Productions to develop a Stranded Death movie. A24 shared in a statement: “It’s official: we have teamed up with Kojima Productions for the live-action film adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed video game, Death Stranding.”
Hideo Kojima, the director and writer of the original game, previously revealed that he is “deeply involved” in the game, but will not be directing it. He explained: “Just to be clear, I am deeply involved in the production, supervision, plot, look, design and content of the DS film adaptation, but I am not in charge of directing.”
Kojima recently offered further insight into the film on the developer’s website stating that it won’t be a direct translation of the game: “There are many ‘game adaptation films’ out there, but what we’re creating isn’t just a direct film “. translation of the game. The intention is that our audience is not just fans of games, but that our film is aimed at anyone who loves cinema.”
He added that they are expanding the Stranded Death: “We are creating a never-before-seen Death Stranding universe, achievable only through the cinematic medium, it will be born.” Kojima also added that he believes A24’s “innovative approach” to storytelling matches what Kojima Productions has been doing for the past eight years.
Kojima previously offered some insight into how the film project initially came about and his vision, saying he has no intention of making a blockbuster-sized film. He explained:
“I was on video calls with many people in Hollywood every week starting last year, and not just for Death Stranding. I received many offers, but my intention from the beginning was never to make a successful film. Alex Lebovici from Hammerstone Studios shared my take on this. There were many proposals to make a large-scale film with famous actors and flashy explosions, but what purpose would the explosions in Death Stranding serve? Making money isn’t something I focus on at all either. I aim for a more auteur approach and the only person who offered to make a film like that was Alex Lebovici, which makes me think that he is a rather unusual guy.”
He also talked about the failures of other video game movies and how this adaptation of Death Stranding will take a “direction that no one’s ever tried before” with a video game movie.
“The failure of movie adaptations of games from a while back led to a lot of movies aimed at gamers, right? That’s why they look the same as a game. I don’t want the Death Stranding movie to be like that. Rather, I’m taking the approach to change and evolve the world of Death Stranding in a way that fits well with the movie. I made Death Stranding a game, and games are games. There’s really no need to turn them into movies. So, in a In a sense, the Death Stranding movie is taking a direction no one has ever attempted before with a film adaptation of a game. I think what I need to make is something that inspires some of the people who watch it to become creators in 10 or 20 years.
The original game “challenges players to reconnect a fractured society after the catastrophic ‘Death Stranding’ event. This opened a door between the living and the dead, leading creatures from the afterlife to wander the fallen world marred by a desolate society. Carrying what remains of humanity’s future in his hands, players embody Sam Bridges as he embarks on a mission to give humanity hope by connecting the last survivors of a decimated America.”
The game begins Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del ToroAND Margaret Qualley.
