James Gunn seems to imply that his brother’s new DC character, Maxwell Lord, won’t be a villain in the role

Last week, DC boss and director James Gunn announced that his brother, Sean Gunn he was cast as the DC character Maxwell Lord. Sean Gunn is no stranger to acting, having starred in seven seasons of Gilmore Girlsas well as all Guardians of the Galaxy films as Kraglin and Rocket’s motion capture body, and previously played the DC character Weasel in James Gunn’s film The suicide squad. Everyone assumed that Sean would appear again in his brother’s projects at DC, so it’s fun to know who he will appear with.

The character of Maxwell Lord has previously been portrayed Pedro Pascal Iin the DC sequel Wonder Woman 1984, and he was clearly a bad guy, but according to James Gunn, it looks like this new iteration will be a little more nuanced. He shared in a thread:

He referred J.M. DeMatteis in the post, who, together with Keith Giffen AND Kevin Maguirehe created the character for DC Comics in Justice League #1 (May 1987), when Maxwell Lord IV first appeared. Lord, a shrewd businessman and self-styled confidence man, played a key role in the creation of Justice League International.

Numerous years later, in the May 2005 one-shot Countdown to the never-ending crisis, Lord takes an evil turn and shoots Ted Kord in the head. The original creative team was never thrilled with this portrayal of Lord, and it appears Gunn isn’t either.

Max Lord’s original co-creator, JM DeMatteis, also weighed in on the threads, saying:

So we might see a whole new side of the character, every time he appears. Some sources say he will only be mentioned in the next few days Superman: Legacy movie, establishing his future, and some say he will actually appear. We’ll see how it all ends. Are you excited to see Sean Gunn’s portrayal of Maxwell Lord?
