David Ayer says his SCARFACE script is one of the best he’s ever written, but the studio wanted ‘something funnier’

David Ayer (Suicide squad) was developing a reboot of Brian de Palmais a 1983 crime classic Scarface in 2017, but his vision for the film ultimately wasn’t realized. During a recent interview with Total Film, Ayer spoke about the project and how her portrayal was too dark for Universal Pictures. She explained that although the script she wrote was one of her best, the studio wanted something funnier when it came to a story about drug trafficking. Ayer said:

“One of the best screenplays I ever wrote was the draft of ‘Scarface.’ It is spread in Hollywood, underground. It’s funny when people talk about the project. “Is this Ayer’s script?” “No, it’s someone else.” ‘Oh alright.'”

He went on to talk about the story he was trying to tell and what the studio wanted:

“It wasn’t too violent. Violence: I can cover it. If someone gets hit, I can photograph them where a head explodes and give a loud R, and that won’t turn people away. This is easy. This is filmmaking 101. I created this rich, soulful journey through the drug trade, and that’s kind of what it is. The studio just wanted something more fun.

It makes you wonder if Universal executives have seen the original film. But obviously they wanted a broader appeal Scarface movie. Speaking about Ayer he said:

“They want to capture as many viewers as possible. I freaking love Universal. Fantastic people. I had this really honest conversation about the movie they wanted to have and the movie I wanted to make. There’s plenty of daylight between us. It’s just easier to say, ‘Let’s park this.'”

So, Ayer ultimately ended up abandoning the project, and it still hasn’t gotten off the ground. Scarface tells the story of the rise and fall of a gangster named Tony Montana. De Palma’s film was the protagonist Al Pacino in the main role. The reboot would have taken place in Los Angeles instead of Miami.

You would have loved to see David Ayer do his Scarface movie?
