Deadlines Doc Talk Podcast: Documentary Filmmakers Join Forces for Innovative, DIY-Style Oscar Campaign

Bad press, King coal, Joonam And Fantastic machine They are all award-winning documentaries, but they are the underdogs in the race for Oscar recognition. Despite the many awards they’ve won at festivals around the world, each of these exceptional films has had trouble getting into distribution, complicating efforts to capture the attention of Academy voters (Monday, King coal signed a deal with American Documentary to air next year POV).

Instead of throwing up their hands and leaving things to fate, the teams behind the four documentaries have taken the notable step of launching a joint “For Your Consideration” campaign called “DIY Fashion” to send. Oscar winner King coal producer Diane Becker, Joonam Producer Keith Wilson and Bad press Co-director Joe Peeler joins the latest edition of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to discuss their groundbreaking project.

More often than not, these films see themselves as rivals competing against each other in the hunt for Oscar gold. But the filmmakers plan to establish a new paradigm. Their DIY FYC initiative “aims to introduce new models for documentary award campaigns that prioritize collaboration over competition,” says a press release from See-Through Films, the company behind it Fantastic machine“While also creating space and opportunity for a much-needed conversation about the future of documentary distribution.”

For his part, Peeler is calling for reforms to the Oscar campaign so that documentaries that have “fallen through the cracks” get the attention they deserve. It’s an urgent matter: Voting on the Oscar documentary shortlist begins next week.
